Breast Cancer Awareness Month

We still remember how surreal it felt when we lost Auntie Choleng 2 years ago to breast cancer. We miss her so much.  Since October is breast cancer awareness month, we want to recognize a few of the SF Bay Area support groups, businesses and nonprofits that provide great services to those affected by breast cancer. Please email us with any other local groups or businesses that we are not aware of.

BAYS – a local support group and online community for young women with breast cancer in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Breast Cancer Action – Bay Area-based national organization that advocates for policy changes in the treatment of breast cancer, for decreasing involuntary environmental exposures that put people at risk for breast cancer, and for rectifying inequities that lead to disparities in breast cancer outcomes.

Breast Cancer Emergency Fund – Provides low-income San Franciscans with emergency financial assistance while receiving treatment for breast cancer to help pay rent, utilities, and uninsured medical expenses during treatment.

Breast Cancer Fund – Bay Area-based national organization that focuses on identifying the environmental causes of breast cancer and preventing the disease.

Festoon Salon – Provides 3 free “welcome back” services (cut, color or other) to people who have lost their hair to cancer treatment (locations in San Francisco and Berkeley).

The Shanti Project – Provides emotional and practical support such as financial assistance, meals, transportation, etc. to San Francisco’s most vulnerable individuals living with life-threatening illness including breast cancer.

Project Open Hand – Offers free meals to breast cancer patients undergoing treatment who live in San Francisco or Alameda County. There are no other qualifying criteria.
